چکیده
We are writing to comment on the article by Arraga-Alvarado and others in the September 2014 issue of The American Journal of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene. 1 To provide some necessary background information about the early recognition of ehrlichiosis and anaplasmosis in Venezuela, we would like to bring to the attention of the manuscript's authors and readers an article published by de Tamí and others in 1994, 2 in the third issue of the Revista Científica de la Sociedad Venezolana de Bioanalistas Especialistas, reporting the evaluation of 33 human blood samples and 50 canine blood samples from Caracas, Venezuela, for intra-platelet inclusions in buffy coat smears. In this pioneering study, platelet inclusion bodies (morulae) were identified in 32% of the canine blood samples and 45% of the human blood samples, suggesting that this microorganism could be implicated in the etiology of prolonged fever syndromes and idiopathic thrombocytopenias described in Venezuelan individuals. In 1996, a study conducted by Perez and others 3 reported the isolation and anti-genic and genetic characterization of a suspected new strain or subspecies of an Ehrlichia-like agent in monocytes from the blood sample of a Venezuelan veterinarian with assumed exposure to infected animals and ticks. Platelet inclusions were also reported in 14% of 87 Venezuelan patients infected with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), 4 suggesting the need for warning HIV-infected individuals and other at-risk populations about avoiding tick-prone areas, carefully examining animals (especially pets and livestock) with clinical signs of tick-borne diseases, and educating health-care providers in Venezuela on ehrlichiosis and anaplasmosis surveillance, prevention, and control. This study reports for the first time molecular detection of Anaplasma platys infection in 4 (13.3%) of 30 Malaysian dogs investigated. A low occurrence (3.3%) of Babesia gibsoni was also noted, being detected in one of the 30 dogs. Rickettsia, Bartonella, Orientia tsutsugamushi, and Ehrlichia DNA were not detected in the dog blood samples. The role of A. platys as an agent of canine anaplasmos...

In this Correspondence, a comment to a recent paper by Nikbakht et al., published in the latest ssu of this Journal is reported. The flavone apigenin can exert both its anti-oxidant potetial via the usual enzymatic ROS scavenging system and the mitochondria biogenesis via the PGC-1α/ TFAM/NRF-1 pathway. The very interesting paper by Nikbakht et al, may earn more insighful clues about the activi...

This commentary reflects upon the article along three broad lines. It reflects on the theoretical choices and omissions, particularly highlighting why it is important to adapt the multiple streams framework (MSF) when applying it in a socio-political context like Vietnam’s. The commentary also reflects upon the analytical threads tackled by Ha et al; for instance, it highlights the opportunitie...
متن کاملHTA – Algorithm or Process?; Comment on “Expanded HTA: Enhancing Fairness and Legitimacy”
Daniels, Porteny and Urrutia et al make a good case for the idea that that public decisions ought to be made not only “in the light of” evidence but also “on the basis of” budget impact, financial protection and equity. Health technology assessment (HTA) should, they say, be accordingly expanded to consider matters additional to safety and cost-effectiveness. They also complain that most HTA re...
